What is Pepper Spray?

Pepper spray a pressurized suspension of water and capsicum placed in a canister to spray an attacker. The spray is made from the fruit of chilis and is a chemical agent that irritates the eyes causing tearing, pain and temporary blindness.  Pepper Spray is sometimes called “mace”.  Mace is used by police and SWAT officers for riot control, crowd control and to control someone the police are trying to arrest.  People are also to carry capsicum spray for self-defense and protection against animal attacks.  Pepper spray is effective used against dogs, bears and humans too.  A person who uses the spray needs to be ready to brake and run as soon as the attacker is sprayed because the temporary blindness disorients the sprayed person for a few minutes. In the case of police, the disorientation gives time to apprehend the offender. Men want mace for bear attacks in larger aerosol canisters when they are in the woods hunting since it is very effective. The product we are featuring on this page is a ½ oz stream style best camouflage pepper spray pen for self defense that you may carry on your person ready for use.

How is Pepper Spray classified by the law?

How is Mace produced?

Capsicum is the active ingredient in pepper spray derived from the fruit of plants in the genus Capsicum which includes chilis.  The fruit has to be finely ground to extract oleoresin capsicum (OC).  OC is extracted with ethanol and then the ethanol is evaporated off.  The resulting product is a wax like resin called oleoresin capsicum.  Wildfire products use a very finely ground capsicum which is more effective than a course ground capsicum.

The last stage of production is adding Propylene glycol to emulsify OC in water. Then the suspension may be pressurized to make the aerosol we call pepper spray.  The product is available in ½ oz sizes up to a 9 oz stream pepper shot pepper spray. Also larger canisters are available for training purposes and for bear repellent.

Do you have a demonsration of Pepper Spray being shot at a person?

Yes take a look at the video below and watch the behavior of the volunteers who get sprayed with pepper spray.

When a person is sprayed with pepper spray the swelling of the blood vessels causes the individual to close his eyes, have difficulty breathing, have a runny nose, and cough some or a lot. The affects might last a person as long as 45 minutes.  The breathing and coughing may last 3 to 15 minutes.

How would a bear react if sprayed with pepper spray?

Watch the video below and see the bear's behavior after a good dose of pepper spray.

How would you treat a person who has been sprayed with mace?

Maalox, 2% lidocaine gel, baby shampoo, milk and water are solutions that are fairly common and have been used to reduce the affects of pepper spray.  Rubbing the skin or eyes will just spread the compound over unaffected areas of the body or into your eyes.  The first aid we recommend is to use water to rinse affected areas since it is usually the most easy to get of the items listed above. Remember the affects wear off on their own.

Emergency personnel or first responders may use baby shampoo and carry it in their kits. This is another fairly readily available product to lessen the affects of pepper spray. Decontamination wipes are manufactured for cleaning the skin of a person who has received pepper spray.

What is the strongest Pepper Spray?

Wildfire makes their pepper spray out of very finely ground capsicum thus producing an 18% product that is 3 million Scoville Heat Units. This is definitly hot.

Generally the strongest pepper spray is 10% capsicum. Be sure to read the labels for the percentage of capsicum and for the heat index. That is how you tell what you are buying is at least 10% and 2 million Scoville Heat Units.  A smaller set of values will not be as affective. Women like pepper spray for dog attacks in smaller aerosol canisters that are easy to carry walking or jogging or just running around town doing errands. This works well on human attackers also. Mace  or pepper spray is often found in canisters that can be carried in the purse or pocket. They are small enough to be concealed in your palm and can be carried on key chains. It is presented in stream and fogger styles. Also larger containers are available for bear spray since no one wants to go up against a large bear with only 1/2 oz of pepper spray. Another method of packaging is in projectiles such as paint in paintball gun projectiles.
