    What is Pepper Spray?

Mace  is another name You may hear Pepper Spray called.  Pepper spray is a chemical agent extracted from chilis that irritates the eyes causing tearing, pain and temporary blindness.  Individuals use this for self-defense and capsicum is used by officers for crowd control and to subdue unruly persons tying to fight with police.  It may be used against people, dogs and bears effectively.  The fact that the eyes are caused to close gives the person who uses the spray time to get away or in the case of police, time to apprehend the offender.

    How is Pepper spray classified?

Mace, Capsicum or pepper spray is called a less-than-lethal agent.  Some states may declair it a weapon but that depends on the state definition and the city in which you live may have another definition.  Some deaths have occurred during or after the use of mace that have partially been attributed to such products.  Generally speaking, this product causes no lasting harm.

    How is Pepper Spray produced?

Fruits of plants in the Capsicum genus, which includes chilis, are ground up.  Capsaicin is the active ingredient in pepper spray derived from the fruit of chilis.  Ethanol is used to extract the OC  from the ground plant material. After that Ethanol is evaporated off.  The oleoresin capsicum is the remaining wax like resin.  Our products use a finely ground capsicum which is more effective than a course ground capsicum.

OC is emulsified in water with the use of Propylene glycol. The material is then pressurized to make pepper spray in canisters.  The product is available right here in one half oz with red injection molded holster.

How does Pepper Spray affect a person?

The person will close their eyes, have difficulty breathing, have a runny nose, and cough a lot or at least some. The cough can  lasts for 3-15 minutes but burning may last as long as 45 minutes.  See the teenagers getting a dose to see what It feels like in the video below.

What is the treatment of a person who has been sprayed with Capsicum?

Maalox, 2% lidocaine gel, milk, water and very often baby shampoo are used to treat the skin.  Do not rub your eyes or skin if you have been sprayed because doing so spreads the compound out over other areas of the body.  If you have nothing else use water to rinse affected areas. Remember within an hour the symptoms will dissipate.

Baby shampoo is often used by Ambulance services and emergency responders. It is cheap and easy to get. Decontamination wipes are manufactured for cleaning the skin of someone who has been sprayed with pepper spray.

What is the strongest Pepper Spray?

Generally the strongest pepper spray is 10% capsicum. Women want mace in for animal attacks in aerosol canisters. Of course this goes for human attackers also. Consider the one half oz with red injection molded holster shown on this page as a gift for someone you care about. Check out the number of heat units to see more fully what strength you are buying.

    How is Pepper Spray packaged?

Pepper spray is often packed in canisters that can be carried in the purse or pocket. They can vary from ½ oz to 4 oz. This is produced in stream and fogger styles. They are small enough to be concealed in your palm and can be carried on key chains. Another method of packaging is in projectiles such as paint in paintball gun projectiles.

Who is most likely to need pepper spray?

Joggers have often needed pepper spray and many have not actually been carrying it.  Joggers have been one of the larger groups that are rape statistics.  Anyone alone in a dark area at night could be a victim of a spur of the moment attack for robbery or rape. Women are assaulted in their homes when the home is broken into.  So having capsicum spray by the bedside is not a bad idea. When going into a dark garage or an unlit parking lot carry your pepper spray in your hand ready to use and have your car keys in the other so you are ready, without fumbling around, to get into your car and drive away.
