What makes Pepper Spray work?

Pepper can make our eyes tear from the spicy quality. Scientists figured out how to extract the hot product from the peppers to create a spray that could potentially halt attackers. Capsicum is the hot product and it is ground to store it. Now pepper spray is used for riot control, crowd control, and for defense against animals like dogs and bears. Women like to have pepper spray for self defense.

What is the history of pepper spray?

We do not know the begining use of pepper as a weapon because it has been cultivated and picked wild for centuries. But chilies were being used for self defense in ancient India and China. Warriors and citizens from China used rice paper to wrapping ground cayenne to throw it at the faces of enemies, opponents, or intruders. Pepper was easy to get and was became a weapon of choice for self defense since it incapacitate a person temporarily. Ninjas, the Japanese secret martial art society, have used ground pepper for disabling their opponents for centuries. Historically, in the Tukagawa Empire in Japan, law enforcement used a weapon called the "metsubishi." Metsubishi was a box of chili pepper powder they used to blow hot pepper into the eyes of criminals. Mexico used chilies dating to 7000 BC. The indians of Mexico were cultivating peppers in 5500 BC. Types of peppers they had were chiltecpin, jalapeño, ancho, paprika, serrano, cayenne pepper. They also had non-hot peppers we call bell peppers in different colors. We do not know if Mexico used peppers for self defense or as weapons. More recent examples of pepper as a weapon date to the 14th and 15th century when slavery was common.

Medical personel used Chili pepper for treating wounds. Pepper was a popular method for torturing individuals, criminals, and slaves. In the 1980's pepper spray became a legalized non-lethal weapon against perps, dogs, anything attacking someone.

How do civilians use Pepper spray?

The US Postal Service introduced oleoresin of capsicum (OC) spray in the 1980's. OC or pepper spray was endorsed by the FBI as an official chemical agent in 1987 and it took 4 more years before pepper spray was legally accepted by law enforcement agencies. Some states in the US and some countries forbid the use of pepper sprays by civilians. It is illegal to use pepper spray, mace or tear gas in Canada.

In the US, there are two types of pepper sprays that can be used by individuals, CS (orthochlorobenzalmalononitrile) and CN (chloroacetophenone). OC or oleoresin capsicum is dispensed using aerosol cans. The spray was originally imported from Canada because it was used by civilians as a bear repellent. The word spread and now in most of the US civilian pepper sprays are safe as well as legal weapons for self defense. Capsicum is considered to be extremely effective. Women use capsicum to repel attackers. When attackers are sprayed on the face OC causes intense pain for as long as 45 minutes including swelling and burning in the eyes.

How does Law Enforcement use OC?

Use of pepper sprays came into existence in the 20th century. First the FBI used OC soon followed by NYPD. Pepper spray was replaced by mace in October 1994. Now 97% of the officers use pepper spray as a non-lethal weapon on mobs, for crowd control and persons that become unrully when they are being arrested.

In January 1997 NYPD switched from original pepper spray to the stronger 10% solution of oleoresin capsicum. The canisters were larger, held at least three times the solution and were effective in a range of 3-15 feet. The police in Netherlands were given OC Sprays in 2003. Sussex Police in the UK were given OC Sprays to fight miscreants and attackers in 2001.
