Pepper Spray

How does the body react when sprayed with pepper spray?

The eyes generally tear a lot because of the product that makes peppers hot. Scientists found out what that was and created pepper spray that could halt the perp! Scientists worked to capture this quality of capsicum in a form that is storable and easy to use, now pepper spray. Today pepper spray is used for riot control, crowd control, and for defense against animals like dogs and bears. Women use it for self defense. With so many varied uses, the history of pepper spray is an interesting read.

What does History say about the use of pepper on humans?

The use of pepper can't be dated because it has been grown for centuries, but history notes that red chili pepper was being used for self defense in ancient India and China. Citizens and warriors in China wrapping ground cayenne in rice papers and threw it at the faces of enemies or intruders. This weapon was easy to obtain thus was first choice for self defense because it incapacitates a person temporarily. Ninjas, a Japanese martial art society, have used grounded pepper for disabling their opponents for decades. The Tukagawa Empire in Japan had police who used a weapon called the "metsubishi."  This is a box of chili pepper the police used to blow hot pepper into the eyes of criminals. Mexico used chilies dating to 7000 BC. Mexican Indians were cultivating peppers in 5500 BC of the following Types chiltecpin, jalapeño, ancho, paprika, serrano, cayenne pepper, as well as bell pepper in different colors. In Mexico we do not find evidence as to whether peppers were used for self defense or as weapons. Hot pepper as a weapon can be dated back to the 14th and 15th century when slavery was rampant.

What are other uses of hot pepper?

Medical persons used Chili pepper for treating wounds and during torture. Hot Pepper was a popular method to torture people, criminals, and slaves. In the 1980's pepper began being used as pepper spray and then was legalized as a non-lethal weapon against perps, dogs, anything attacking someone.

How is pepper spray use in the US?

The US Postal Service first introduced Pepper spray or oleoresin of capsicum (OC) spray in the 1980's. The FBI endorsed pepper spray as an official chemical agent in 1987 but another 4 years passed before pepper spray was legally accepted by law enforcement agencies. In the US, there are two types of pepper sprays that can be used by civilians CS (orthochlorobenzalmalononitrile) and CN (chloroacetophenone). Law enforcement uses Pepper spray  but replaced it for a time with mace in October 1994. Now 97% of the law enforcement officials use pepper spray as a non-lethal weapon on perps, and other crowd control.

Is pepper spray illdgal in some countries?

Yes Canada states it is illegal to use pepper spray, mace or tear gas in Canada. OC or oleoresin capsicum is insoluble in water and is dispersed using aerosol cans. Interestingly the spray was first imported from Canada where it was being used by civilians as a bear repellent spray.
